We don’t need any special excuse to eat grilled cheese sandwiches, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

But it’s National Grilled Cheese Month (!), so let’s celebrate with a new creation born from an old classic.

You know how you eat roast beef with horseradish cream sauce for Christmas or New Year’s? I brought the horseradish into the sandwich in the form of wasabi cheese today, and it’s a great, snappy addition, along with some bitter arugula and sweet fig jam.

Recipe: Roast Beef Horseradish Arugula Grilled Cheese

Summary: Meaty, spiced with wasabi cheese, stuffed with bitter arugula and a slather of fig jam, this is a sandwich that hits all the flavor notes.

Ingredients

  • Crusty sandwich roll

  • Sliced wasabi cheese
  • Baby arugula leaves

Instructions

  1. Slit the roll, spread mustard lightly on one side and fig jam lightly on the other side.
  2. Layer roast beef, cheese slices and arugula on one side, and then put the bread lid on.
  3. Grill in a George Foreman-style grill or panini press (or in a hot skillet) until the bread is toasted on the outside and the cheese is melted on the inside.

Wine pairing

Gallo Family Vineyards Café Zinfandel. This zippy sandwich pairs quite nicely with Café Zinfandel, which has all the deep flavor of a zin in a lighter, smoother, fruity, lightly sparkling style. With hints of strawberry, raspberry and watermelon, this is a perfect sandwich wine, patio wine and picnic wine. Anything with arugula (not to mention fig jam) is a huge winner in my books!

Beth,
Agreed! I feel like arugula is underappreciated so I am doing my part to shine the spotlight on it!

Thank you for the intro to wasabi cheese! You are a walking culinary thesaurus Ms. Dorothy! Love the touch of fig jam, too =)

P.s. Your grilled cheese does look perfect…I’m inspired to try my next grilled cheese without the buttered bread!

Ninja,
You won’t go back to butter, I predict. Some grilled cheese sandwiches you can squeeze out like a sponge…that’s how much butter they have. Not needed!

Shaina,
Arugula makes EVERY sandwich better. Well, haven’t tried it with peanut butter and jelly…might have to do that.

I love that you started with my favorite, roast beef, and then amped it up a zillion times with the wasabi cheese, arugula and fig jam! What a great way of reminding us, once again, that your kitchen is filled with delectables!

Love the addition of the fig jam for a sweet balance to the beef and spicy cheese. I’ve tried horseradish cheddar, but never wasabi. Yum!

Dorothy Reinhold April 7, 2014 at 6:17 am

Brianne,
Yeah, I like BOTH horseradish cheddar and wasabi cheese. Wasabi might clear your sinuses better. 🙂
