Air Fryer Blueberry Crisp (For One) is a perfectly sweet, easy, fruity and comforting dessert that can be ready on a whim. Easily scale it up for more servings.
How to make Air Fryer Blueberry Crisp
It couldn’t be easier, from the moment you get the idea to the moment you pull your crisp out of the air fryer. First, gather your ingredients. For this recipe, you’ll need:
- Blueberries. I call for fresh, but I’ll bet you could use frozen; you might have to add another minute or two to the baking time. I haven’t tried frozen, but I always say go for it.
- Granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, salt
- Butter. I nearly always use unsalted butter because that’s what I keep around, but use salted if that’s what you have. The amount of butter in a crisp is minimal.
- Vanilla paste. Vanilla increases the perceived sweetness in things, so adding a little squirt of paste make it taste a bit sweeter without using more sugar. This paste, from Taylor & Colledge, includes the seeds, and comes in an easy-to-use tube. I didn’t measure it in this recipe, just used a tiny squirt, but in general usage, you would use 1 tsp. paste for 1 tsp. extract.
- Oats. Use old fashioned rolled oats, not 1-minute or quick oats, and certainly not steel-cut oats!
- Cinnasational spice blend (or use cinnamon or a warm-spice blend like apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice). I’m so fond of this Cinnasational because it has cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and cloves, my all-time favorites all in one jar. It’s from Selefina Spices, and I’m using it on repeat in lots of recipes! The moment I opened the jar and sniffed it, I thought it smelled exactly like the spices used in my Hall of Fame Cranberry Sauce. This blend is a collaboration that Selefina did with professional pastry chef Brianna Shaver, and it’s a very good all-purpose baking blend, especially if you don’t have to buy all the individual spices.
- Orange zest. This is optional, but I love the combo of blueberries and orange, and adding just a bit of zest really amps this up. Omit if you don’t have an orange or don’t like the flavor.
Measure berries into a ramekin. No need to grease the ramekin.
Add sugar and flour to the berries and stir to coat.
In a separate bowl, make the topping, using brown sugar, flour, oats, Cinnasational spice blend and salt.
Stir vanilla paste into melted butter (so it mixes well with the topping).
Pour butter into the topping and mix.
It should look like chunky sand.
Optional topping ingredient: orange zest (use a microplane zest tool {affiliate link} to easily zest your orange, and mix the zest into the topping.
Use your hand to sprinkle it on top of the berries.
Place ramekin in your air fryer. Air fry 15 minutes (no need for preheat or turning reminder), and then remove to cool for a bit. Serve warm or room temperature, your choice. Vanilla ice cream on top? Of course, if you like!
Doesn’t that look good?
And you can easily scale this recipe if you’d like to make 2 or 3 of them. The limiting factor is how many ramekins can fit in your air fryer and still allow hot air to circulate. For me, the max is 3; your mileage may vary.
Air Fryer Blueberry Crisp (For One) is a perfectly sweet, easy, fruity and comforting dessert that can be ready on a whim. Easily scale it up for more servings.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup fresh blueberries
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon all purpose flour
- .
- Topping
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- Squirt vanilla paste
- 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons old fashioned oats (not instant, not 1-minute)
- 1/4 rounded teaspoon Cinnsational baking spice blend
- Pinch fine sea salt
- Optional: orange zest
Directions
- Add berries, sugar and flour to a ramekin or custard cup. (I used a ramekin that is 4 1/4 inches in diameter by 1 3/4 inches tall, and another time used one that is 3 3/4 inches in diameter by 2 inches tall. Both worked great!). Stir to mix and coat berries.
- In a bowl, mix topping ingredients: butter (melt in microwave for 25-30 seconds), a tiny squirt of vanilla paste, brown sugar, flour, oats, spice blend, and salt. If using orange zest, use a microplane to grate a bit of orange zest in (a swipe or two from the orange skin), and stir well to combine the topping. It will be sandy/chunky.
- Using hands, sprinkle topping on top of berries in ramekin, and place ramekin in air fryer. Set to 350F and air fry for 15 minutes (no turn reminder, no preheat).
- Remove from air fryer (use tongs as a grabber, or pot holders...it will be HOT!). Allow to cool for a few minutes, and serve warm or at room temperature. Add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream on top to gild this lily!
- Storage: Can be left overnight on the counter if needed. For longer storage, pop into the refrigerator or even freeze it (covered airtight).
- Serves 1.
- Make more: Can easily be scaled to make 2, 3 or 4. Be mindful of how many ramekins fit into your air fryer...that is the limiting factor!
