The Grow-Your-Own Mushroom Kit I got in my swag bag from Camp Blogaway apparently got tired of waiting for me to set it up and water it, and after 2 weeks of sitting unattended in my office, offered up this display of talent!
Kind of gives a new meaning to the phrase “funny mushrooms.” Not that I had any experience with that.

Those mushrooms were determined to grow! thats really cool 🙂 I’d love a kit like that, do you know where we can find them? My mushroom loving hubby would love to grow his own 🙂 thanks!
Andrea,
You can get it from http://www.backtotheroots.com. They are in Oakland, CA (510) 922-9758 (in case you want to determine where the nearest retailer is to you). I have one on my counter right now and the ‘shrooms are sprouting like crazy out of the correct orifice!
Mine grew out the top, too! So I finally followed the directions… and they’re sprouting now. Planning to throw the mushrooms into an omelet later in the week. 🙂

Hi everyone,
This is Nikhil, one of the co-founders. What a funny picture. This does happen sometimes, just means it is a super healthy kit!! Dorothy, you gave some great advice! If you just pick off the mushrooms from the top (and eat them), they are still good to go. Just continue to follow the directions that are included in the kit. Be sure to soak it overnight for the best results. They’ll be growin’ in no time:)
Best,
Nikhil
Nikhil,
thanks, mushroom expert!
Mine just sprouted out of the top of the box this week too after forgetting about them! I just used them last night but still haven’t watered the rest of the box. Poor shrooms, having me as their owner. : (
I love the instructions on the box “Open, Mist, Harvest”….there should be an “Or Else”
Nena,
You are so funny (but right!). Apparently, mushrooms wait for no one. Who knew?
I have already used one small batch, waiting for more to appear. It took me by surprise, but it was a wonderful one! Several of us have experiences this mushroom ambush:)
Mine came out of the top, too!
I keep forgetting mine, too. I better get to it!
yup… it’s a growin.. now what do i do with it?
Louise,
You are so funny! Open it and follow directions to water it. Then harvest the ones that are currently growing and use them now!
Wait for next batch to grow.
oh man- right now walking out to go check mine in the garage? yikes, what will i find?
