

Garlic Ginger Soy Grilled Steaks: A simple soy-ginger-garlic marinade can take your steak to a whole new level.
When nothing but the best will do — such as Father’s Day — I head for the meat counter and stop at the steak section. There is something so indulgent, so top line, so special about a good, nah…a great steak.
Some of the best steaks I’ve had at restaurants have been angus beef, so I’ve been happy to spot Certified Angus Beef® brand available in select grocery stores in my area. Indulgent restaurant meals are wonderful, but there’s something extra fine about a special meal in the comfort of home, enjoyed around the family table.
Why seek out Certified Angus Beef® brand? It’s not just a buzzword or a trend; it has a lot going for it:
Generous marbling. We know this means fantastic flavor. Marbling is the word for the tiny white lines of fat that striate the cut of beef, naturally basting it as it cooks. Fat = flavor, and the right amount of fat can make a huge difference in a cut of beef.
- Stringent quality standards. This includes rules on maturity, size, tenderness and appearance.
- The ultimate grade. USDA inspectors grade beef as Select, Choice and Prime, with Prime topping the grading scale. These same inspectors evaluate the top of the scale — the best Prime — and using the 10 quality standards, apply the Certified Angus Beef® brand to only those that surpass the USDA’s strict Prime standards in addition to meeting the 10 quality specs. Less than 1.5% of beef that can achieve this pinnacle.
Now that we’ve established what brand of beef you’ll buy, it’s time to consider how to cook it. In truth, a great cut needs only salt and pepper as seasoning.
But I’ve found that a super simple marinade of a little garlic, a little ginger, some soy sauce, brown sugar and a splash of olive oil amp the whole experience up just another notch. A quick grilling, some spuds and greenery on the plate beside the beef, and you have a memorable meal.
Dad’s worth it, all the way.
How long to cook your steak
When I want Certified Angus Beef® brand, I hop over to Gelson’s in Pacific Palisades, Calif. to get it. If you’d like to know where to get this type of beef in your area, use their store and restaurant locator.
Fire up the grill and slap on the steaks. And then call your Dad to the table!
Garlic Ginger Soy Grilled Steaks: A simple soy-ginger-garlic marinade can take your steak to a whole new level.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 teaspoons garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste
- 2 Certified Angus Beef® brand strip steaks (about 1 pound 8 ounces total)
Directions
- Measure soy sauce in a 1-cup measuring cup. Add sugar, olive oil, garlic and ginger and stir until sugar is dissolved. Put meat into a heavy-duty zipper-top plastic bag and pour marinade into bag.
- Remove air from bag and refrigerate for about an hour, or up to 12 hours if that is more convenient for you.
- Remove meat from marinade (discard marinade and bag) and grill meat until it reaches desired doneness for your taste buds; medium rare is perfect!
- Remove from grill, let rest undisturbed for 5 minutes, slice and serve.
- Serves 4.

You mean after 30 minutes of marination you thought the flavor was too strong? Hmmmm…I marinate for at least an hour on this recipe, and we like it at that point (but you can do even longer as I note in the recipe). I guess when you make this, you might like to marinate for less than 30 minutes, and you should be fine.
